Web Development – How to Get Started in Web Development

11 years ago I purchased a book about basic HTML development. A purchase that would end up defining my entire professional career. I bought it because I wanted to create a web page for a school project. This was in the days of Geo city sites and it looked absolutely horrible.

Still, when I finally finished it with the aid of my trusty HTML book I was prouder than I thought possible.

The book explained HTML in a very simple fashion and I learned by following its example. 11 years later I ply my trade as a web developer and it all started with that one book.

The key to getting into web development is truly having the passion for it. If you have that all you need to do is practice. If you see something cool on a website try to figure out how they managed to do that. Then do it yourself!

If you’re reading articles, blog posts or documentation with code samples always try to emulate them yourself! Then when you’ve got the sample working, mess around with it. Try to figure out what happens if you change a couple of things here and there.

If you’re having fun doing this chances are that web development is something you would love to do. Especially if you think it’s fun messing with code until early in the morning! Experimenting is truly the key element in web development. Especially when you’re first getting started it’s very much about trial and error.
